Now, let’s start talking about the picnic activities to have at your party!
5 Picnic Activities to have at your Birthday Party
1. Bottle Ring Toss
This adorable DIY Bottle Ring Toss by Woman’s Day is super easy to make, very cute, and a lot of fun for kids. To make this game, you will need 3 different colors of acrylic paint, 12 clear glass bottles with labels removed, 1 wooden crate, 12 Embroidery Hoops – 3” with outer rim discarded, 4 colors of yarn, and hot glue! Follow the instructions by clicking on the photo below!
To play this game, you will divide up the rings for 2-4 players. Each player will take turns throwing the rings to try to make them onto the bottles. If a player scores a ring on a bottle, they are awarded 3 points. If a player makes two rings on the same bottle, they are awarded 4 points for each ring. The game ends with the first player to score 21 points in total. If there is a tie game, then the game ends with the player who scores a ring on a bottle first.
2. Popcorn Shoe Cup Race
This game, by Better Homes & Gardens is a great relay race game for an outdoor party. For the game, you will need to make two pairs of shoe cups. Take two plastic cups and poke holes in the bottoms of them with a push pin. Then push a wide rubber band through the holes and secure inside the cup with a paper clip. You will also need two large bags of popcorn and two baskets to dump the popcorn in.
To play this game, split the kids into two teams. Then have the first person in each team strap the cups onto their shoes and fill them up with popcorn. They will then race to the baskets, dump the popcorn in the basket, and then race back and give the cups to the next person in line. This continues until one of the bags of popcorn is empty. Once the game ends, measure the popcorn in each of the basket to determine the winner – the team with the most popcorn in the basket!
3. Sponge Water Bombs
This awesome take on a water balloon fight by The Chic Site is a perfect activity for a picnic party! To make these sponge water bombs, you will need a bunch of sponges (any color combo you desire), string, scissors, a ruler, and a marker. First use your ruler and marker to cut your sponges into 1” pieces. Then, gather 9 strips of sponges and tie them together in the middle. Make sure to tie them really tight. Then fluff/shift the sponge pieces around to form them into a ball type shape! Finally, soak in water.
You will want to make sure the kids are being safe and having fun! So be sure to set down some ground rules. To stage your Sponge Water Bomb Fight, have the kids divide into two teams and set up forts (with supplies you give them of course). Then, give each team a pre-allotted amount of water bombs. To make things fun, you can also give out fun awards for things like most dry, best sportsmanship, etc. Then make sure the kids know the following rules:
- There will be absolutely no ganging up on one kid. Doing so will result in eviction from the game.
- No bombing of spectators!
- No blows to the face or head.
- Have fun!
4. Water Balloon Spoon Races
This is another fun water game by Two Shades of Pink. For this game, you will need some wooden spoons (spruced up however you like) and a bunch of small water balloons.
To play this game, have the kids divide up into two teams. Then, one at a time, each child will place a water balloon on a spoon and run around a designated spot and back. Then, the next child will go. If the balloon falls and/or breaks, then the child has to start over. The first team done wins!
5. Hit the Can Game
This game is an oldie but a goodie. For this game, you will need 6 aluminum cans with the labels removed. Then, using some free printables from Paging Super Mom, cover the outsides of the cans in pretty wrapping. Other than that, you will just need a ball or bean bag to throw at the cans.
To play this game, simply have kids (and adults if you like) line up to take a shot at knocking down all of the cans in one toss! There are really no winners and losers in this game. It is really just all for fun!
